Menopause and Your Skin
Did you know that over 64% of women report skin changes and struggles in peri-menopause and menopause?
Under-Researched in spite of touching all women, menopause can impact a woman's health and does bring skin changes as well.
Perimenopause can range from 2-8 years, with the standard rule being "a decade of perimenopause". This will alter depending on the woman's health, lifestyle and genetics.
In fact, the term is a bit outdated, as the actual term might better be "climacterium" as the climacterium is actually the stages between reproduction and post reproductive life. Peri as a term, simply means "around" so, you may be "around" menopause but the transition time, is climacterium.
Why am I bringing this up?
Because this proves how incredibly under-researched and under-reported the transitions with women are in our society.
The skin changes are of note.
Estrogen is essential for skin hydration as they increase production of glycosaminoglycans, which promote increased sebum. They also increase healthy water retention and improve the barrier function of the stratum corneum, that outer layer of skin that can look "scale-like".
Note that I am not one to try to reverse time, as I feel aging is an honor that we fail to recognize. However, reversing stress? That's another story!
Estrogen and stress do not go hand in hand. Increased daily stress can lower estradiol levels and, can in some women, amplify them. For many women, this can be a bit of both, a roller coaster of estrogen; that means your skin is going through a roller coaster of responses as well.
Some tips to help your climacterium or menopausal skin:
1. Work on decreasing stress triggers
2. Apply stress management tools to your life
3. Eat a healthy diet, as a poor diet will also "stress" the body and cause a roller coaster of estrogen.
