10 Hints That Your Skin Struggles Potentially Emotional
While almost all skin challenges result in some emotional struggle, some of the struggles are actually from an emotional root cause.
The following ten questions will help you to decipher if you are experiencing an emotional skin-based reaction.
- Are you finding yourself having emotional upheaval and then experiencing a breakout, rash or dry skin?
- Do you start skin treatments and then they "stop" working?
- Do people tend to tell you in stressful times, how like a "rock" you are?
- Have you been spending a lot of time in front of the mirror, picking or inspecting?
- Are you having a problem with following your doctor or dermatologists instructions for healthier skin?
- Do you feel like you need to push anger, anxiety or depression inward to "save face"?
- Do you feel shame in some areas of your life?
- Do you do sabotage yourself by eating poorly, spending too long in the sun or otherwise, harming your skin or self?
- Are you feeling isolated in your life, that you have no one to talk to?
- Do your skin issues chase each other? Meaning, you might notice a breakout, that goes away and then you notice dry patches or rashes, or wrinkles, then another breakout happens... a circular experience.
The more you've answered yes to the above questions, the more you may have an emotional root cause that might be propelling your skin struggles or, exasperating them,.
Three tasks to do right now:
1. Focus first on symptoms. If you feel pain or itching that is overwhelming, see a doctor to relieve the symptoms and negate any other cause. If it is self-help, you can focus on relieving the symptoms yourself (any of our products might be right for your particular set of symptoms).
2. Focus on emotions. Emotional anguish can be present with trauma, chronic stress and the ramifications of skin struggles as well. Feel the feelings and honor your healing.
3. Do not feel a lack of independence. Many clients have stated that they feel that they are a child looking to their physician or me, as the "parent". While a therapist or doctor is a support, you are in control. Skin struggles have a way of making us feel small, but that's a feeling only. You are just being triggered to when you were a youth and needed to look up to your parents for help. Feel empowered that you will tap into the root issues and address them.
Even if you have a hereditary skin condition, emotions play a big part of your breakouts of dry, weeping or otherwise inflamed skin.
Any emotional upheaval can cause a dip in immune system, set you off of your pH, raise stress hormones or glucose levels, alter histamine levels, plus so much more.
So, in order to keep skin smooth and healthy, keep your emotions as smooth as possible as well.
