Cellulite is the thorn of many women, and it keeps some women stuck in long pants and long-sleeved shirts, even on the most sweltering days.
Women are more apt to get cellulite, and it can first show up in puberty. There are three main reasons that cellulite exists:
- The structure of the tissue
- If it runs in your family
- Your hormone health
First, lets talk about the structure of the tissue.
Cellulite is simply fat that herniates through the fibers of the tissue. While most people think of cellulite as a "heavier" person's problem, know that it has nothing to do with over all body weight. It does however, crop up more often on the more fleshy parts of the body. So, where you see cellulite is going to probably be the upper arms, the buttocks and upper thighs and the abdomen.
Next, let's discuss genetics.
If it runs in your family, it might be simple genetics. Some people are simply more apt to have cellulite, and some families have habits (such as sitting often, not being active) that predispose them as a unit, to cellulite.
Lastly, hormones play a huge part
During puberty, during monthly menses, during perimenopause and menopause, for women, hormones fluctuate greatly. These are times that women see more instances of cellulite.
This is all great, but how to get rid of cellulite?
Exercise helps to increase tone. It's that lack of tone that often increases the look of cellulite.
2. Push those lymph nodes.
Getting massages and getting up and just moving around, will help encourage lymph drainage. Some people also swear by yoga (I'm one!) and rebounding (ditto). Others like kickboxing or jogging. Even getting up and taking walks or cleaning the house on a daily basis, is going to get you off the chair or couch, and push the lymph. Plus, most of this will help you benefit from #1, exercise.
3. Circulation is important, and while the answer is still to get up and move, massage or self-massage can help. Boosting circulation boosts lymph but also increases oxygen. Oxygen will help with collagen production, and that helps reduce the appearance of cellulite.
4. Eat well
Eating well is relative for most people. Remove processed foods from your diet, and reduce or remove dairy and sugar. Increase nuts, seeds, fruit and vegetables. A healthy diet shows, and with misfortune, an unhealthy diet will eventually show as well.
5. Reduce Stress.
Reducing stress will lower cortisol levels, reduce inflammation and help you to feel more vital. It's a life saver not just a cellulite reducer.
Lastly, and most importantly, don't get worked up over cellulite. You are not defined by your connective fiber or surface herniated fat cells, but rather your character. Be the best you can, but be happy with your best.
